History of Fort Lauderdale
The territory that is known as Fort Lauderdale today was first occupied by Tequesta Indians. However, during the 16th century, Spanish explorers brought smallpox to the area, which nearly wiped the Indians out. By 1763, there were only a few Indians left, and they fled to Cuba.
Control over the territory changed between Spain, the U.K. and the U.S. until about the 20th century. At this time, the area was known as the New River Settlement. In 1838, the U.S. built a stockade within the settlement and named it Fort Lauderdale. By the late 1800s, the entire territory of the New River Settlement was known as Fort Lauderdale.
