History of Miami

Although the Miami area was first inhabited by Tequesta Indian tribes, Spanish explorers arrived in the area around 1566. Spain controlled the territory until 1821 when they ceded the land to the United States. The first community built within Miami was known as Fort Dallas.

With its fertile land, Miami grew quickly drawing farmers from all over the state. The railroad also brought much growth to the city during the late 1800s. The city was named Miami after the Miami River, which was derived from the Indian word Mayaimi. The city was incorporated in 1896.
